Broadside with Lit Students
Twice now I've had the opportunity to arrange an activity at Minnesota Center for Book Arts for my "Human Experience in Literature" students at St Kate's. The students and I design a broadside collaboratively, choosing text from their assigned reading that semester, and using an illustration by Shawn Hebrank.
This activity is meant to compliment the students' poem memorization assignment, encouraging them to consider the oral qualities of a text alongside the traditional art of the book, giving them both aural and visual experiences with language. The students get a short introduction to the history of printing and make creative decisions as a group. We print the broadsides together, which makes for a fun and interactive closing activity, and each student gets a copy to remember the class by.
The student broadsides are on display in Whitby Hall at Saint Catherine University (St Paul, MN).
